After heavy rain in Texas, you can improve your garden by improving drainage, adding mulch, and replacing nitrogen in the soil.

Improve drainage
  • Create a rain gardenA shallow depression that captures and drains runoff
  • Add drain pipes, swales, or dry streambedsRedirect water away from vulnerable areas
  • Build raised bedsFor areas with poor drainage
  • Add French drainsHelp redirect water away from vulnerable areas
Add mulch
  • Apply a thick layer of organic mulchSuch as wood chips or straw
  • Mulch helps:
    • Protect soil from erosion
    • Stabilize the soil
    • Retain moisture
Replace nitrogen
  • Heavy rains can flush nitrogen from the soil
  • Consider replacing nitrogen in some cases
Other tips
  • Stake plantsFor additional support after heavy rain
  • Loosen areas of compacted soilTo allow for better water drainage
  • Trim and dispose of any damaged or diseased plant partsTo prevent the spread of plant diseases
