Cactus

How to grow cactus

To successfully grow cacti, provide them with bright light, well-draining soil, and minimal watering, especially during their dormant winter period. Cacti thrive in warm, stable temperatures and should be repotted only when necessary, as they tend to prefer being slightly pot-bound.

Bloom where you are planted, even if it’s in the middle of the desert.

Detailed Growing Guide:

7. Propagation: Cacti can be propagated from cuttings. Allow the cut end to dry (form a callus) before planting it in well-draining soil.

1. Light: Cacti need bright light, whether indoors or outdoors. Indoor cacti can be placed on sunny windowsills or supplemented with artificial light if needed. Outdoor cacti should receive 4-6 hours of direct sunlight, with established cacti tolerating longer exposure.

2. Soil: Use well-draining cactus potting mix or create your own by mixing peat-based potting soil with coarse sand or grit.

3. Watering: Water cacti only when the top few inches of soil are dry, and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water weekly. In winter, reduce watering to every few weeks, just enough to prevent shriveling.

4. Fertilizing: During the growing season, feed cacti with a diluted liquid fertilizer every few weeks.

5. Temperature: Keep cacti in a warm, stable environment, ideally between 60-75°F (16-24°C).

6. Repotting: Repot cacti only as needed, typically in the spring before the growing season begins.

 Additional Tips:

When planting in the ground, ensure the area is well-drained.

Overwatering can be fatal for cacti. Avoid letting them sit in water.

Airflow: Cacti thrive in well-ventilated areas.

Avoid extreme temperature changes near drafty windows or heating vents. .

Consider using terracotta or ceramic pots, which allow for better drainage.
