Firefly Petunia by Light.Bio may be the most innovative plant we offer! It creates an out-of-this-world growing experience because its white flowers glow in the dark. This bioluminescent Petunia looks like an everyday Petunia during the day, but then after the sun goes down, you’ll see the buds and flowers give off a soft greenish glow reminiscent of fireflies.

When happy, this Petunia blooms nonstop all summer long, showing off a profusion of fragrant white trumpet-shaped flowers. To thrive, it needs plenty of sun, regular watering, and some fertilization.

Enjoy Firefly Petunia in pots and planters or landscape beds and borders — anywhere you want to enjoy its unique beauty at night.

Plant Bio

Petunia Firefly

Firefly Petunia naturally glows in the dark—it doesn’t require any special treatment, chemicals, etc. This is because the team at Light.Bio was able to insert genes from a bioluminescent mushroom into the plant to create its glow. The plant gathers energy from the sun during the day, then at night some of that energy is used to produce the glow.

Firefly Petunia does not cross-pollinate with North American native plants and in testing by the USDA, have been shown to have no noticeable impact on wildlife, including pollinators.

Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.

Care

Light Level: Direct Sunlight

This plant wants direct sun at least half to a full day. Grow it in a planter or garden bed where it gets plenty of sun.

Water Level: Very Thirsty

This plant is a very thirsty one, check on it 2-3 times per week and add water every time the top of the soil feels dry to the touch.

Quick Tips

The darker the environment, the more you’ll notice the glow. Like the stars in the sky, in city environments with lots of light pollution, the bioluminescence will be less visible than in the countryside.
